Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a family discount?

If there are two members of the same family there is a 10% discount. For three members of the same family, the discount is 25%. For times and frequencies please see the fee schedule.

Can I pay as I go instead of once a month?

Fees are due at the beginning of the month for the ENTIRE month. No exceptions. Currently, I do not offer a "pay as you go" fee schedule.

What will I be learning?

You will be learning Hawaiian dance (hula) basics for both ancient (kahiko) and modern (auana) styles of hula. Additionally you will be learning Hawaiian terminology.

Are there any extra material fees or additional monthly costs?

You are required to wear a pa’u skirt to class. Dimensions and instructions on how to sew this skirt will be provided on the first day of instruction. You are responsible for purchasing the material (poly/cotton) elastic and thread, at your own expense. The estimated cost for all materials is no more than $30.

I have a medical condition. Is this style of dance physically strenuous?

The ancient form of hula (kahiko) is very bombastic requiring you to dance in a low stance close to the ground for long periods of time. Kahiko at times can also be a cardio workout. Auana on the other hand is a lot less strenuous as the dances are performed in a more upright position and most are slow and graceful.

Can I choose to learn just the auana and not the kahiko?

Traditionally, the answer would be no. However, if you have a medical condition that will limit or restrict you from strenuous physical activity, please see the instructor for further consideration.

I have heard that the Hawaiians worshiped pagan gods and goddesses such as the goddess of fire, Pele. Will we be worshiping idols or pagan gods?

No. I do not participate in paganistic rituals. However, you will be responsible for learning about the various gods and goddesses and the role they played in Hawaiian mythology.
