You will be learning Hawaiian dance (hula) basics for both ancient (kahiko) and modern (auana) styles of hula. Additionally you will be learning Hawaiian terminology.
You are required to wear a pa’u skirt to class. Dimensions and instructions on how to sew this skirt will be provided on the first day of instruction. You are responsible for purchasing the material (poly/cotton) elastic and thread, at your own expense. The estimated cost for all materials is no more than $30.
The ancient form of hula (kahiko) is very bombastic requiring you to dance in a low stance close to the ground for long periods of time. Kahiko at times can also be a cardio workout. Auana on the other hand is a lot less strenuous as the dances are performed in a more upright position and most are slow and graceful.
Traditionally, the answer would be no. However, if you have a medical condition that will limit or restrict you from strenuous physical activity, please see the instructor for further consideration.
No. I do not participate in paganistic rituals. However, you will be responsible for learning about the various gods and goddesses and the role they played in Hawaiian mythology.
